This one is full of surprises. "The Amazing Mr. X" is a creepy blend of elements of film noir, horror, and mystery and the combination works well. We have a smooth talking, charismatic con man, Alexis, who preys on the vulnerable by claiming to have supernatural powers, and Christine Faber, a grieving widow, who becomes entangled in Alexis's web of deception. Simple enough, but the plot takes surprising turns all the way through.
The film features quite good visuals with deep shadows and dramatic lighting creating a noirish atmosphere. The cinematography is just outstanding. There's also some terrific sets, magic tricks, a wire recorder and even some nicely done in camera special effects. The dialogue is well written and the performances all suit the plot and atmosphere. Turhan Bey delivers an especially compelling performance as Alexis, a complex character who is both charming and sinister.
While, ok, not a classic, "The Amazing Mr. X" is a fascinating and astonishingly well-made movie that deserves to be rediscovered on a Saturday afternoon. But what's the little sister's strange accent?
